Job Title; Design Engineer

Salary; £20,000 – £30,000 per annum dependent on experience

Hours; Permanent dayshift, Monday to Friday – 8:00am – 5:00pm

Location; Peterlee, County Durham

Commutable From; Peterlee, County Durham, Washington, Sunderland, South Shields.

Our Peterlee based client is currently looking to recruit a Design Engineer on a permanent full time basis to produce clear and accurate designs in line with a product specification. The successful applicant’s contribution to the organisation will be the generation of new cost effective designs which will contribute to the company’s product portfolio, you will be responsible for the generation of new products and for ensuring long term product safety and reliability by contributing to validation and test programme development.

The Role;

  • Attending handover meetings
  • All technical aspects of the project following an APQP procedure
  • Compile a list of all design activities relevant to a specific project
  • Organise and chair design review meetings
  • Prepare project specific health and safety documentation such as risk assessments
  • Ensure that all documentation and correspondence relevant to the project design is filed (electronically or as a hard copy) and that a technical file is compiled from the beginning of the project
  • The technical file must comply with CE and CDM requirements as appropriate
  • Produce clear and accurate designs in line with the project specification, budget constraints and associated standards – job specific and per legislation
  • Ensure that all drawings are checked prior to issue
  • To check other Design Engineer’s drawings prior to issue
  • To check that third party (independent) calculations conform to standards and the project contract
  • General arrangement drawings should exist for all Designs, unless they are concepts and must have a bill of materials referencing all item numbers and confirming quantities
  • Attend project review meetings as required
  • Generate detailed drawings for manufacture of all relevant components, including all requisite details such as; materials, finishes and welds
  • Health and safety objectives must be satisfied at all times whether activities are taking place in the office, workshop or on site. Risk assessments, method statements and health and safety plans must be complied with at all times
  • Follow quality control objectives as laid out in the SCX Quality manual.
  • All relevant Procedures must be followed to ensure Customer Satisfaction and achievement of SCX objectives.

Our Ideal Candidate;

  • Must have a degree in an Engineering discipline (typically mechanical, manufacturing or industrial design)
  • Experience in a similar Design Engineer role
  • Will have come from an engineering and/or manufacturing background with experience of modern manufacturing techniques and processes
  • Will have product and system knowledge
  • Experience within the automotive industry desirable however not essential
  • Competent in using AutoCAD / Inventor / Solidworks 3D / Siemens NX / Catia V5
  • Ability to produce scoping calculations for sizing simple structures and mechanisms
  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (ideally Cosmos) and ANSYS
  • Knowledge of Matched and 3D CAD (Ideally Solidworks)
  • Experience of working design projects within an APQP framework
  • Knowledge of DFM and FMEA and VAVE
  • Experience of working with Test Engineers to develop validation techniques and programmes
  • Will have had previous exposure to direct customer interface
  • Good knowledge of mechanical assemblies and plastics with some electrical experience an advantage however not essential
  • Must be able to demonstrate engineering problem solving capabilities
  • Computer literate with a very good knowledge in the use of MS-Office, SAP and SRM
  • Good oral and written skills
  • Full UK drivers licence
